Rules:
** Each team will consist of up to five members, with alternates. Alternates are only allowed between games and may only compete with one team. Each team must designate a captain, who must be seated in the second position from the timer.
** A minimum of six rounds of pool play.
** Two brackets of tournament play after pool play has finished.
** Tiebreakers:
a. Winning Percentage
b. Head to Head
c. Total Points
d. Coin Flip
** Each game will have 18 questions. There will be no time limit and no mercy rule. There will be 5 minutes between rounds. If a team is more than 5 minutes late, that team will forfeit the game. Questions will be ordered by the Host School.
** The competition will begin with a toss-up question, worth 5 points. Without conferring, any member may buzz in within 15 seconds of the question being completely read. The team member buzzing in must be acknowledged by the reader (or designated official) before giving an answer, within 3 seconds of acknowledgment. Toss-up questions can be re-read but only at the expense of the allotted time.
** A team member giving a correct toss-up answer entitles the team to a bonus question, worth 10 points.
The team members have 15 seconds to confer on bonus questions before the answer is given. The answer to bonus questions must be given by the team captain either before or immediately at the end of the 15 second time. Any team member from the team receiving a bonus question may ask for a repeat of the bonus question as long as it takes place during the 15 second conferring time.
** When a player buzzes in on a toss-up question the clock will stop. If the answer is incorrect, the opposing team will be allowed the remaining part of the 15 seconds to provide an answer. Time starts immediately after the reader has declared an incorrect answer. The question will not be re-read, unless requested, but still at the expense of the remaining time frame. If neither team gives the correct answer, the next question will be read.
** If a team buzzes in before the toss-up question has been completely read, the reader will stop reading the question. If the question is answered incorrectly, the question will be repeated for the other team and they will be given the full 15 seconds to respond to the question.
Paper and pencil will only be allowed during math questions. Mathematical units (labels) must be given in order for a response to be correct. No calculators or other electronic devices are allowed.
** The winner is the team accumulating the most points by the end of the 18 questions. Each round will consist of 18 questions, regardless of whether there are enough points to be earned for a comeback win. In the event of a 12 tie, tie-breaker toss-up questions will be asked until one team answers a question correctly (no bonus question awarded).
** Challenges: There will be no challenges during the warm-up matches. During the tournament, if a team feels a challenge is necessary, the team captain is the only one who may make the challenge and must make it at the time of the answer (before the next question is given). Team members, competing at the time of the challenge, and their coach may tell the captain to challenge. After the game, if the total points in question is within the margin of victory, then the reader and coach’s panel will render a final decision.
