We are well into testing season, and the year is very quickly coming to an end. We have taken all of our state tests, but coming right up will be our MAP tests. Plus another field trip is just around the corner. Our state testing schedule was very relaxed this year. We had 3 tests to take, ELA, SCI, and MATH.  We took one test each week for three weeks. Our focus was very strong and we know that these tests are very important. We are preparing to move into 6th grade, and these tests play an important part in our placement . . .

It is hard to believe that our school year is already to the month of April. We sure had a lot of lion weather days in March. First graders know that April showers bring May flowers, but they would prefer it showered or rained at night!! Anxiously Awaiting Spring in Preschool!

Since seeing that the groundhog saw his shadow on Feb. 2nd, we have been anxiously awaiting Spring’s arrival.  We received a tower garden in our classroom at Cook and planted peppers, peas, lettuce, bok choy, swiss chard and basil.  Once we harvest our produce we plan to have a salad feast. Each day during calendar time we have been counting how many days of school we have had so far this year.  We will arrive at our 100th day of school mid March and plan to celebrate the number 100 in several different ways. . . .

Christmas Around the World

As most of you parents know, Johnson County Central Public Schools has been using Accelerated Reading for many years to allow our students to individually practice their reading skills with books of their choice. When switching over to the Renaissance Learning Place online we included the Accelerated Math, Math Facts in a Flash and Accelerated Math 2.0. We utilize STAR Reading and STAR Math for placement purposes as well. These are available in Spanish format as well. These products are used by 1st-8th grade and SPED students only. . . .

Every year we read the Nebraska Golden Sower nominee books in the elementary library. There are ten books nominated annually for this award. Each week one of the nominees is read and discussed on its merits for the award. Students are taught how to judge the quality of a good book.  At the end of the ten weeks students vote for the best book. We will be notified as to the winning book some time in May. This gives the students great reading practice. The children also develop friendships with the residents.
