Middle School Math

By Hunzeker, Karen on March 19, 2015

I cannot believe how fast the year is going!  We are beginning the fourth quarter already.  I have enjoyed my first year of teaching at Johnson County Central!  I hope to continue to educate the youth of this great community for many years to come.

With the spring quickly approaching, that means it is NeSA time!  This is the Nebraska version of state standards test.  The 7th and 8th grade students will be taking the math version of the NeSA on April 14th and 15th.  Since this is less than a month away, the students are working hard to prepare for this test.  We are finishing the last of the standards that need to be covered by the time they take the test, along with reviewing the concepts they have already learned throughout the year.

The 7th grade math is working on a variety of concepts.  They are currently working on scientific notation, transformations and probability.  The last chapter hit on probability, but we are going to covering it more since it is so important.  Transformations are different shifts objects can go through.  This includes dilation, translation, rotation and reflection.

Pre-Algebra is working on different pairs of angles when parallel lines are cut by a transversal.  These angles are called alternating interior angles, alternating exterior angles, corresponding angles, along with vertical angles, complementary angles, supplementary angles and adjacent angles.

Algebra I is working on the Pythagorean Theorem, probability and pairs of angles.  These are all concepts that will be tested on the NeSA test in April.  They seem to be enjoying these concepts more than the last couple of chapters.  Third quarter always seems to be the hardest quarter for students in Algebra I.
