Two JCC Students Attend Leadership Symposium at UNL

Seth Laver and Michael Werner were invited to attend the Black Leadership Symposium at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Reverend Jesse Jackson, the keynote speaker, emphasized in his speech “There is Still Work to Be Done,” the importance of a quality education, always doing an individual's best and believing that “I Am Somebody!” Rev. Jesse Jackson, President and founder of Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, has played a pivotal role in virtually every movement for enpowerment, peace, civil rights, gender equality, and economic and social justice. Rev. Jackson has visited thousands of high schools, colleges and universities encouraging excellence, inspiring hope and challenging young people to award themselves with academic excellence and to stay drug-free.
Other speakers and sessions students could attend included Rev. Dwight Ford from Eastern Nebraska Community Action Partnership on “Never Easy, Always Necessary,” Dr. Wayne Reynold from Grace United Methodist Church on “Young Men's Toolbox,” Peter Ferguson, Youth Development Coordinator for Lincoln Public Schools, on “What is your blueprint for life?” and a panel of college students “College Life: The Real World,” among others. All students were able to attend an Information fair that allowed individuals to talk to representatives from the various colleges and programs at UNL.
