One Act Play Production: The Cop and the Anthem
By Durre, Tania on October 21, 2014
The Johnson County Central High School One Act Play cast and crew are eagerly preparing for this fall’s production of The Cop and the Anthem. This play is a comedy adapted for the stage by Mark Bucci from a short story with the same name by O. Henry.
Set in the early 1900s, The Cop and the Anthem tells the story of Lemuel T. Thwackbusher, a resident of New York’s park benches. Lemuel realizes that winter is upon him, and he must find shelter to survive the harsh weather. Each year, Lemuel works up a scheme to be sent for three months to his favorite winter resort—the local prison. However, this year, no matter what he tries, it just won’t work! What ensues is a comedic series of encounters between Lemuel and law enforcement as Lemuel pleads his case to be arrested. The play ends with one of O. Henry’s signature surprises.
