Ag Diesel Trip
December 29, 2024
JCC students, Tyler Albers, Wes Schmid, and Levi Othmer recently traveled to True Ag and Turf in Falls City and Bruna Implement in Humboldt for some hands-on learning in Ag Diesel along with JCC Skills USA advisor, Olivia Reuter.
They were able to see diesel mechanics in action, on the job working on everything from skid steers to tractors to combines, and also learned some skills needed to compete in the Nebraska State Skills USA Ag/Construction Diesel contest in April.
They learned more about the electrical systems of machinery including how to use digital voltmeters and test lights, diagnostic tools used by diesel mechanics, and how to detect and fix leaks. They also learned about precision planting, pre-delivery inspections of new machinery, the logistics involved in running a business that sells and repairs new machinery, and the scholarship opportunities that each dealership offers.
Freshman Wes Schmid had this to say, "These were great experiences. I was very surprised by the capabilities of technology within the ag sector. Visiting these two dealerships really opened my eyes to all of the career paths that I could follow in agriculture, in addition to farming.
Junior, Levi Othmer, added, "I was glad that I had the opportunity to have these experiences. I learned things that you can only learn in the workplace from people who actually work in the industry."
