Women In Science
May 08, 2024
JCC sophomores Briana Robeson and Saige Rother and freshman Molly Weber participated in the Women in Science Conference at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln sponsored by Nebraska’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and the University of Nebraska Lincoln’s (UNL) Center for Science, Mathematics & Computer Education.
One hundred students from across Nebraska, representing 22 high schools, attended the Conference on April 5-6, 2024. Students had an opportunity to meet female role models in science-related careers. Female scientists and students from the University volunteered to serve as panelists, give workshops, labs, and mentor conference participants.
The students heard from panelists and successful female science faculty, who described their career paths and how to prepare for a science career. These scientists represented a diverse array of science careers including animal science, biological sciences, geology, entomology, chemistry, public health professions.
The keynote speakers, Georgia Jones and Judy Wu-Smart, participated in a fireside chat moderated by Jocelyn Bosley. Dr. Jones is an associate professor and Food Specialist focused on food safety and sanitation. Dr. Wu-Smart is a UNL researcher in pollinator health and director of the UNL Bee Lab. Helping bring these two amazing women together, Bosley is a research impact coordinator with the UNL Office of Research.
Highlights of the conference included a tour of the Nebraska Innovation Campus, where students explored the Makerspace, greenhouse and food innovation center; STEM-related labs and workshops with hands-on activities in the Beadle Center and departments across the university; and visits with UNL faculty, undergraduates and graduate women students in science-related areas of study.
