We are in the home stretch as the final quarter winds down. Seniors are counting the days till graduation. They have already received their caps and gowns and are starting to plan their parties and hand out their graduation announcements. They still have a few hurdles to jump over in the classroom. In science, the anatomy students will be taking CPR training this month and turning in a research paper if they are taking the class for college credit. The physics class will be finishing up with electromagnetic waves and then creating a Rube Goldberg machine that incorporates elements from all the chapters we have covered. The chemistry II class will be finishing up oxidation-reduction reactions and then concentrating on a comprehensive lab practical where they will apply all that they have learned to identify unknown solutions.
Juniors have been prepping for the ACT test which was given this week, as well as getting ready for prom which is April 14th. Invitations for prom have gone out and juniors will soon be decorating the gym and getting everything ready. In chemistry they will begin working on their group project to find a creative way to help teach one area of chemistry to help classmates better understand it. Each group will tackle a different area of chemistry and will share their creations with their classmates. After that, they will have a lab practical where they will use the techniques and knowledge they have gained to devise a plan to identify unknown substances and then have a chance to actually test this in the lab. We will probably end the year with a favorite lab where we investigate the freezing point of water when adding an various amounts of a soluble ionic compound and try to find the optimal temperature for causing an organic colloidal mixture to solidify (in other words – we will end the year by figuring out why adding rock salt to ice will make it cold enough to turn a mixture of milk, cream, sugar and vanilla into homemade ice cream).
