Sophomores studied photosynthesis and cellular respiration the first quarter this year. We have done several labs over these topics. We invited Mrs. Grotrian’s kindergarten class to visit our classroom and join us in growing plants first quarter as we observed the effect of different colors of light on the process of photosynthesis. We also did several experiments with eggs where we dissolved the shell in order to observe osmosis across a cellular membrane. This quarter we are studying cell division and genetics and will end the semester with DNA, RNA and Protein synthesis.
Juniors and seniors in Biology II will start doing dissections this week on invertebrates. We will have a variety of specimens to dissect starting with a squid. Our long term project for this semester is to gather information on insects and put together a video of all the different classes of insects, their habitats and characteristics.
Seniors in Anatomy & Physiology have finished studying bones and are learning muscles by building them on miniature skeletons. We started with the legs and will be moving up this week. By the end of the semester the skeletons should have a fairly complete set of muscles and will be used for our final lab quiz. Our class is also hosting 10 students from Cozad through distance learning. We had a chance to meet them in person at UNMC in October at the UNMC Career Day. Students had a chance to talk with UNMC students in a variety of specialties and also had a chance to see some of the new technology that UNMC is using in teaching their medical students and residents.
Juniors and seniors in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Biology II will have the opportunity to go to Doane next week to tour the cadaver lab and talk with Mr. Drew Case about careers in health care and science.
