“I have a truly amazing staff here at JCC, one I would put up against any other school,” says Coach Haughton. A majority of the staff consists of coaches that he coached with over 15 years ago, including one player he coached over 20 years ago during his first stint in Tecumseh. Truly a coaching circle life. “I told my staff this award is just as much as a validation of a job well done for them as it is me.”
The Berens Coaching Award is named in honor of former Omaha Roncalli head coach Mike Berens, who among his many achievements in that role led his undermanned team to the 2003 Class B state final. Despite having limited numbers on his roster he was able to take his team to the school’s only state final, his ability to get the most from his team a blueprint for all our Berens Coaching Award winners over the years.
